Turning processing

Turning processing

One of the most widely used methods of processing metals by cutting is turning, that is, obtaining parts that are bodies of rotation. Metal turning, which is carried out on special machines, is based on this principle. Cylindrical, shaped, conical or end surfaces can be processed on such machines. In the same way, you can grind grooves, process holes, perform many other works with fairly high accuracy and quality of manufacturing parts. It was thanks to the lathe - the production and processing of metals in a short time were able to achieve impressive progress.

Turning processing overview

Currently, the lion's share of the production of metal parts and products falls precisely on lathes. Moreover, in recent years, various automatic lathe complexes have become increasingly widespread, which work with minimal human intervention, performing almost all the tasks of processing products independently. Metal processing is carried out on lathes with the help of cutting tools, such as drills, reamers, cutters, dies.

The cutting process is carried out due to the rotation of the workpiece on the lathe, as well as the feed movement, that is, the translational movement of the cutter. The feed movement can be both longitudinal and transverse. Likewise, the angle of the cutter to the axis of movement of the workpiece can vary over a wide range. The entire process of processing the product in the lathe is carried out in semi-automatic mode.

With the help of a lathe, you can perform turning, i.e. processing the outer surface of the product, trimming - working with end surfaces, boring - working with internal surfaces, as well as cutting, i.e. dividing the product into parts or dividing the workpiece and the finished product. Thus, gears, shafts, pulleys, rings, bushings, couplings and many other rotating parts can be manufactured with high precision on a lathe.

All lathes consist of a bed, which is the basic foundation of the machine, on which all other parts of the machine are mounted, the headstock, which houses the gearboxes, the spindle and the gearbox, which transmits the movement to the caliper from the spindle.

The machine also includes an apron that converts the rotation of the screw into a translational movement of the caliper with the tool, the actual caliper on which the cutting tool is attached. They distinguish:

  • Universal;
  • Special;
  • Specialized lathes.

The most common universal machines, they allow you to perform almost all types of turning work. On special machines, one part of a certain size is processed, they are usually not reconfigured to work with other parts. On specialized machines, as a rule, parts produced in mass or large-scale production are processed, they differ in the presence of specific equipment and tools used for processing blanks.
