Turning processing

Turning processing

One of the most widely used methods of processing metals by cutting is turning, that is, obtaining parts that are bodies of rotation. Metal turning, which is carried out on special machines, is based on this principle. Cylindrical, shaped, conical or end surfaces can be processed on such machines. In the same way, you can grind grooves, process holes, perform many other works with fairly high accuracy and quality of manufacturing parts. It was thanks to the lathe - the production and processing of metals in a short time were able to achieve impressive progress.

Turning processing overview

Currently, the lion's share of the production of metal parts and products falls precisely on lathes. Moreover, in recent years, various automatic lathe complexes have become increasingly widespread, which work with minimal human intervention, performing almost all the tasks of processing products independently. Metal processing is carried out on lathes with the help of cutting tools, such as drills, reamers, cutters, dies.

The cutting process is carried out due to the rotation of the workpiece on the lathe, as well as the feed movement, that is, the translational movement of the cutter. The feed movement can be both longitudinal and transverse. Likewise, the angle of the cutter to the axis of movement of the workpiece can vary over a wide range. The entire process of processing the product in the lathe is carried out in semi-automatic mode.

A lathe can be used to perform turning, which is the processing of the outer surface of a product, facing, which is the processing of end surfaces, boring, which is the processing of inner surfaces, and cutting, which is the dividing of a product into parts or the separation of a workpiece. and the finished product. Thus, nuts, screws, shafts, pulleys, rings, bushings, couplings, and many other parts that are bodies of revolution can be manufactured with high precision on a lathe.

All lathes consist of the following main parts:

  • 1. The bed is the main base of the machine, on which all other parts of the machine, including the spindle stock, are mounted.
  • 2. The spindle stock, which contains the gearbox, the spindle and the feed box, which controls the movement of the carriage.
  • 3. The carriage, which converts the rotation of the lead screw into a translational movement of the carriage with the tool.
  • 4. The carriage, on which the cutting tool is mounted.
  • 5. The tailstock, where the centering devices and drills are installed.
  • 6. The electric drive - this is a motor with a belt drive.
  • 7. The machine lubrication system.
  • 8. The system of the cutting tool feed.

According to the purpose, lathes are divided into:

  • Universal;
  • Special;
  • Specialized lathes.

The most common universal machines, they allow you to perform almost all types of turning work. On special machines, one part of a certain size is processed, they are usually not reconfigured to work with other parts. On specialized machines, as a rule, parts produced in mass or large-scale production are processed, they differ in the presence of specific equipment and tools used for processing blanks.
